The Fifth Pocket is a mission. Fifth Pockets provoke our imagination and our potential to make a difference. The Fifth Pocket is not ultimately what I want to feature - I want to highlight people. People have an image that I believe has sacred origin. The stories shared in this experience bring our images together in fun, surprising, and unexpected ways. People are at the heart of this vision.
People are unique, different, and surprising. Ideally, every Fifth Pocket should reflect the wearer's peculiar quirk, interest, or niche pocket need. People should be able to customize, build, and experiment with different styles, features, and compartments. In other words, I wish my current Fifth Pocket did a few things better. Therefore, I want to be able to sew Fifth Pockets in a way that reflect the unique image, interest, passion, gift, and mission that each and every one of us have.
But even further, my hope is one day to start selling custom Fifth Pockets on this website. I need to learn how to sew first. My goal is to sell my first "Danny Pocket" by the end of the year. I am currently saving up for sewing classes and a sewing machine. I hope to focus on sewing over the summer when my seminary classes are not in session.
My even broader goal is to train people, looking for work, to sew Fifth Pockets. To quote Father Greg Boyle, Jobs are the best way to keep people out of jail. I believe we were made to work, and sewing might be a great creative and vocational outlet for people willing to learn.
I want to sell the Fifth Pockets at cost (labor and materials with 100% transparency), and then, 100% of what is paid beyond the costs and labor will be donated to a charity sponsored by fellow Fifth Pocketers. In other words, 100% of the profits go to causes that you are passionate about. I don't need money, but I would like to help.
If you are interested in giving to this cause, I welcome any donations. The easiest way, currently, is to give through venmo. My venmo account is @Daniel-Stidham.
